2. BBC Radio 1 - Modern popular music and current chart hits throughout the UK
    BBC Radio 2 - A wide range of popular music from the 1960s.
    BBC Radio 3 - Classical music, jazz and opera, with World music, drama and arts too.
    BBC Radio 4 - Speech Related: News, drama, comedy, science and history.
    BBC Radio 5 - News and sports
    BBC Radio 6 - Classic tracks across different eras and genres
    BBC Asian Network - Everything from Bollywood, Bhangra and British Asian music to underground and new DJs and artists.

3. This range reflects the cultural diversity of the UK, by having very different themes all at the same time on separate stations, so that people with any musical interests can find something that they like.

4. Commercial radio is a radio that makes money by selling adverts.

Component One - The Radio Industry

Public Service Broadcaster - Broadcasting intended for public benefit, rather than making money.

Commercial Radio - Radio made to make money.

Community Radio - Local radio stations.

Podcast - Audio or visual episodes about a theme - Usually between a cast of hosts talking.

DAB Radio - Digital Audio Broadcasting.

RAJAR - Radio Joint Audience Research - collects information on radio stations.

License Fee - The cost for a Radio License.

Royal Charter - Constitutional basis for the BBC, setting out its Object Mission, and Public Purposes.

Remit - To send money to, or pay someone. // Objectives of a radio station.

Convergence - The combination of two forms of media, to have features on both.


BBC Radio - Public Service Broadcaster, broadcasting many national stations, as well as local stations. Each have a different target audience, and broadcasts different things.

Community Radio - Cover small areas, and targeted at specific groups. They aren't made to make money. 

Commercial Radio - Radio funded by advertising, often focused on particular genres.


2. The BBC Remit is to "act in the public interest, serving all audiences through the provision of impartial, high quality and distinctive output and services which inform, educate and entertain.

3. The license fee is £169.50 for coloured TV, and £57 for black and white TV. One person per household has to have one.

4. BBC Radio 4 broadcasts Speech related things.

5. The Radio 4 target audience is people 55 years old and older.

6. An example of a local community radio station is BBC Cornwall.

Briefly explain the difference between how public service radio and commercial radio are funded. [4 marks]

Public service radio is funded by The TV License, which is paid for by the public people listening to it, whereas Commercial radio is funded through advertisements. Commercial radio focusses on certain groups of people, and so companies will advertise themselves on that station to help them to reach that target audience.

1. A Public Service broadcaster is a radio station that isn't created to get money, funded by TV Licenses. Independant from Government, funded by the public - BBC
2.  Commercial radio is funded by adverts. 
3. BBC Radio 4 broadcasts speech related shows. 
4. Radio is regulated by Ofcom in the UK. 
5. Music streaming services, such as Spotify has affected the popularity of radio in recent years. 

DAB

Digital Radio means that there is more choice and more options to listen to.

Podcasts

Podcasts are a downloadable programme, which can focus on different interests or topics, including drama series, comedies and factual shows.

Radio in the UK is still very popular, as 88% of the adult population (49.5 million) listen to the radio each week.


Briefly explain why radio is still so popular [4 Marks]


Radio is still so popular because it can give Information. This makes it popular as it features in the Uses and Gratifications theory. Another reason that radio is still so popular is for background sound, as a lot of people like to have music in the background when doing different tasks, and the radio is an easy, convenient way to have it.


The Archers

L/O: To explain the context and background of our set product


  • It started in 1951.
  • It is a soap opera
  • It was originally about rations and food shortages.
  • It is set in a rural community.
  • It can have more serious storylines, such as drug addiction and family breakups.
  • It can have lighthearted storylines, such as Marmalade making competitions
  • If possible, the Archers happens in line with real life affairs happening on that exact day.
  • If a real life event can be predicted, it will be written into the script, this happened with COVID-19

Soap Opera Conventions

  • There are multiple ongoing stories to keep viewers 'hooked'.
  • The target audience is females, so they often feature strong female characters, called matriarchs.
  • Stories are focused on family, work, and relationships.
  • Multi-strand narratives to reflect real life.

How can you listen to the archers?

  • They are about 13 minutes long.
  • They are on at 7pm every every day, except Saturday, with repeats at 2pm the next day.
  • Weekly omnibus every Sunday morning.
  • They are available on demand 30 days after broadcast.
  • The weekly Omnibus podcast is available to download.
  • It can be watched internationally on the BBC Sounds app.

Listeners

  • The Archers has approximately 5 million listeners, plus 1 million online.
  • Their target audience is older British females, and they feature many female characters in the show.
