How do you Compare Representations?

L/O: To write and structure an effective exam style answer

  • One mark per minute
  • 5 minutes planning - list similarities and differences -> Judgement
  • Use Structure to write it

EXAMPLE

In the GQ cover, David Beckham is represented as sophisticated. He is wearing a tuxedo which has connotations of wealth and elegance. This contrasts with the Cosmopolitan cover where Carrie Underwood is represented as fun and sexy.

Cosmopolitan:
  • Challenged stereotypes
  • Stereotypically feminine style clothing
  • Positive representation - fun - happy
  • Muscles - masculinity

GQ:

  • Challenged stereotypes
  • Stereotypically masculine colours
  • Positive representation - mythical - snake hair (Medusa) - powerful - scary
  • Sexual Objectification - no clothes - Provocative facial expression.

They have presented genders as very different.

Structure:

Introductory sentence, giving overall comparison.

  • How gender is represented in Cosmopolitan
  • How gender is represented in GQ
  • How far the representation is similar in the two magazines
  • How far the representation is different in the two magazines.

In the Cosmopolitan cover, Tom Daley is represented in a more feminine way. This is seen in multiple ways, including the bright colours, such as pink, being a stereotypically feminine colour, with connotations of love and empathy. However, there are still elements that show him in a masculine way, through him showing his muscles.

In the GQ cover, Rihanna is represented as scary and powerful. This is seen by the snakes in her hair, portraying Medusa, a mythological figure who could turn people to stone by looking at them. The low angle makes her look powerful, as she is physically higher than the camera.

Ryan Gosling Covers GQ January 2017
These GQ covers show the brand image, as they are all shown in a masculine way, from the use of stereotypically male colours. They show their focus on fashion and lifestyle, by having the cover star dressed smartly, and the cover lines relate to lifestyle. for example, in David Beckham's cover, he is dressed up smartly in a suit, and one of the cover lines on Ryan Gosling's says "Purge your closet, get in shape, renew your life"

Case Study One: Raheem Sterling - GQ

L/O: to explore the context and layout design for GQ Magazine

GQ targets its audience of men by making male cover stars look admirable, to seem like role models. They also sexualise women to make them seem 'desirable' .

GQ represents Gender very differently. They make men seem like role models, and people to look up to. However, they sexualise women, and act as if they are made to be looked at. This can be seen in the Jennifer Lopez cover, where it shows her with no clothes, only a bed sheet, and a cover line says "More proof that God is a man", as if Men made her to be looked at.

Raheem Sterling

Colour Pallette

The colour Pallette comes from the outfit that Liam Gallagher is wearing. He is wearing a black jacket with gold buttons. This is reflected in the text, as most of it is white, which has connotations of being modern, and sophisticated, and contrasts the black.

Layout

The layout of the magazine follows conventions having cover lines around the outside of the image, not going over it.

Anchorage Text

The main cover line anchors the main image, by using an Oasis song title, referring to Liam Gallagher. Also above the cover line, it says 'icon', which tells people that he is extremely popular, and easily recognised.

Image

The image, shows a medium close up of Liam Gallagher wearing a black jacket with gold buttons, and black glasses with gold frames. This connotes that he is of high class, and a symbol of his status. The image shows direct address, as he is looking directly at the camera. His serious facial expression shows that he wants to be taken seriously.

One of the cover lines, says "Dele Alli The future of English Football" The fat that they have used a football related cover line, links to GQ's target audience as football is stereotypically watched and played by men, much more than women.

He eventually moved to Manchester City, and became the most expensive player in England. At Manchester City, he received lots of hate, especially in one game against Chelsea in December 2018. This urged him to speak out about racism in football, and he said that the media was not helping it. This is why he is the cover star of the GQ magazine, as he is standing up to racism in football, and speaking out on the issue.

This shows how GQ wants to cover serious topics to appeal to a wealthy and professional ABC1 audience

1C) Layout and Design:

This GQ cover shows many magazine cover conventions. For example, the Z shape layout makes the magazine flow where the eye naturally goes, which is common in magazine covers, to make them more accessible. It also has one main image, which gives a basic outline of what the magazine will contain. The cover lines around the outside link to other topics, to bring in a larger audience. The colour pallette of black, gold and white has a sophisticated look, which appeals to their typical audience of an ABC 1 male.

4. The purpose of a magazine cover is to initially make people pick it up.
5. A stereotypical cover star for a women's fashion magazine is one who is tall, slim  Young, white, attractive

Case Study Two: Vogue Magazine

These two covers show Vogue's new approach towards diversity, by one model being Harry Styles, a white male and the other being Rihanna, a black female. In the past, vogue has only used slim, attractive, white females as cover stars, but now they have a large range of people. In other magazines, black models, including Rihanna have been whitewashed to have lighter skin, or sexually objectified but Vogue doesn't do this. It has also changed to challenge masculine stereotypes, by having Harry Styles wearing a dress, which men are often frowned upon for doing.

Malala Yousafzai

- She has won a Nobel peace Prize in 2014
- In 2012 she was shot by the Taliban
- She wrote an autobiography called 'I am Malala: The Girl Who Stood up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban'.
- She fought for Girl's education

Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist who was shot in the head when she was a child, after creating a famous blog about life under Taliban rule, under a fake name. She survived, and was taken to England, where she began to fight for Girls having the same education rights as boys around the world, doing speeches for the UN an winning a Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. I think Vogue has used her as a cover star as she has a very unique story, fighting against a terrorist organisation and surviving being shot in the head, and she was speaking up more again, around the time of the magazine being published, as in June 2021 the Taliban was beginning to take over Afghanistan, so she wanted to raise awareness for this.

Malala Cover Analysis

Malala Is British Vogue's July Cover Star | British Vogue

Media language has been used in many different ways to create different meanings.

For example, in the main image, we see can see the dangers that Malala lived through as a child, by the red colour pallette. This shows this as red has connotations of danger, and violence, but also loyalty. As a child, Malala was living in Taliban-occupied Pakistan, where she was shot in the head on a bus. Despite this, she still tries to raise awareness for people in her country, who are in similar dangers to her. Furthermore, she is wearing a red Hijab, which shows how loyal she is to her religion. The shot type is a Medium Close-up and we can see direct address to the audience as she is looking at the camera, making eye contact with the reader. This shows that she is a very kind and compassionate person, as it is a respectful thing to hold eye contact with someone.

In the main cover line, her name is in a bold, white font, which has connotations of her power and pride. It also contrasts against the red background, making her name stand out to show her importance and bravery. The anchorage text says "Survivor, activist, legend". The triplet here makes it easier for readers to remember Malala by these three words, and shows how much she has done for people in a similar position to her. The italic font of this has connotations of wealth, and it is around her name, like a frame for it, solidifying her importance.

This cover follows the conventions of others, through the 'Z' shape layout. This was chosen as it starts in the top left, and then going to the right, and down, which is how the human eye usually travels. Which makes it easier for people to read.

Exam Question

Explore how this front cover of Vogue magazine uses media language to communicate meanings

layout and Design [5]

In this magazine cover, the text and layout uses media language to communicate different meanings in many ways. For example, this can be seen by the 'Z' shape layout. This follows the stereotypes of magazine cover conventions as many covers use this layout because it follows the pattern that the human eye naturally follows. Furthermore, the serif font that the cover uses has connotations of wealth, and elegance. This links to Vogue's target audience of ABC1 females, aged 20-44. Also, the anchorage text and part of the main coverline in italics around Malala's name creates a frame around it. This emphasises her importance as an activist.

Do Now

1. Representation is how something is shown, or how the media wants you to see something.
2. We can think about whether stereotypes are followed or challenged. Is it positive or negative?
3. Malala is muslim
4. No, Malala is not a stereotypical cover star for a fashion magazine.
5. Red - Loyalty to her religion // Violence she suffered as a child // Her power and high status.

Representation

In the past, Muslims have been represented as terrorists, within extremist groups. They are usually seen to be straight males, with no disabilities who usually never have romantic relationships.

In terms of ethnicity, the vogue cover is very diverse. Usually, in a woman's fashion magazine, the cover star would be a white female. However, in this cover, Malala, a muslim is the cover star, and the cover lines mention a black woman, and a black man.

Gender:

Fashion - Supports stereotypes
Love - Supports stereotypes
Fighting - Challenges stereotypes
Other cultures and people
Intelligence - Interested in more than just fashion and beauty

Explain how both ethnicity and gender have been represented on this cover?

In this cover, ethnicity is represented in an anti-stereotypical way. This can be seen by the main image, by the cover star, Malala. Usually, a cover star would be a white female, however Malala is a muslim. Muslims are typically seen as males who are terrorists within extremist groups. Malala challenges these stereotypes as she is shown to be a powerful woman, which can be seen by the red colour pallette, showing her loyalty to her religion, and her high-status. Furthermore, in the cover lines, we see mentions of Jourdan Dunn, and Anthony Joshua, both of which are black. This challenges the conventions of a fashion magazine as it shows multiple different ethnicities and races, rather than just the stereotypical white females.

Gender is represented in a stereotypical way. This can be seen by the cover lines. The cover lines mention 'Love', 'beauty' and fashion. This is stereotypical as woman are seen as only caring about how they look. Furthermore, she is presented as powerful, through the use of the colour red, and direct address. Whilst this challenges stereotypes for the public's view of females, it follows the conventions of Vogue magazines, as they always present females as powerful.

On the other hand, Vogue also challenges the stereotypes. This can be seen in the main image, as Malala is not a model. Instead, she is used to spread her story. This is seen in the main cover line, "The extraordinary life of Malala" This challenges stereotypes that woman aren't smart, and are just to 'look at', as it shows that they are intelligent, and think about other people and cultures or ways of life.

1. The vogue cover shows diversity.
2. "Fighting talk' is anti-stereotypical in a women's magazine.

5. In the mast, Muslims have typically been represented as terrorists males.

Comparing

- In the Vogue cover, Lizzo is represented as powerful. It challenges stereotypes that women only care about how they look, as it focusses on more serious topics, as seen in the anchorage, "Hope, Justice and Election". Intelligent - Talking about politics.

25 Mark Question

Similarities:

  • Both covers have anchorage that relates to empowerment.
  • They are both presented as feminine.
  • They are both represented as wealthy.

Differences:

  • Malala is presented as a kinder, empathetic person - Direct Address.
  • Kim Kardashian is being sexualised.
  • Malala has a red colour pallette, Kim Kardashian has a Black, White and pink colour pallette.
  • Vogue's cover has unstereotypical coverlines for females, whereas Elle's cover's coverlines are stereotypical.
There are more differences.

Overall, I think that the representations shown by the Vogue and Elle covers have similar amounts of similarities and differences, when it comes to the representations of gender.

In the main images, both cover stars are represented very differently. On Vogue's cover, Malala is represented as a compassionate and empathetic person. This can be seen by the direct address of her looking at the camera. On the other hand, on Elle's cover, Kim Kardashian has been very sexualised which can be seen by the way she is wearing a much more revealing outfit that appeals to the male gazeThese show different representations of gender, as The Vogue cover represents woman as kind and caring, whereas the Elle cover presents women as objects to look at.

Another difference between the covers, can be seen in the cover lines. First of all, in the Vogue cover, the coverlines challenge stereotypes. For example, the Vogue cover has the coverline, "Fighting Talk". This challenges stereotypes as fighting is typically something for men. On the other hand, Elle's cover supports stereotypes. This can be seen by the coverline "Fashion's New Minimal". This supports stereotypes that women only care about fashion and how they look.

On the other hand, a similarity can be seen by the colour pallets of the covers. First of all, on the Vogue cover, it has a red colour pallette. This shows Malala's loyalty to her religion, as well as her wealth and importance, and the pain and violence that she had to suffer through as a child. On Elle's cover, there is a black and white colour pallette. This presents Kim Kardashian as a high status, wealthy person. The colour pallets have similar meanings, as they both present women as capable of being high class, and successful. Furthermore, the colour red has connotations of importance, and luxury, which links to Vogue's target audience of ABC1 females, and their brand image of sophistication and exclusivity.

Another similarity is that the anchorage text has similar meanings in both covers. For example, the anchorage text on the Vogue cover, says "The extraordinary life of Malala Survivor, activist, legend." This presents women in a way that shows that they are educated, and care about important topics, and other peoples stories of their lives, and also shows that Malala's life is one that should be honoured. Similarly, the Elle cover also shows that women are intelligent and educated too, as it says "A smart woman's guide to self-belief." These covers both challenge stereotypes that women don't care about serious topics, and that women aren't intelligent.

Overall I think that visually, there are more differences than similarities between the two covers, however, they both convey similar meanings overall.

Assessment DIRT

Question 1

5 mark question = 2 points

b) Language

Vogue also communicates meaning through language choices. For example, the anchorage text refers to Malala as a "Survivor, Activist, Legend". These are empowering words, especially 'Legend" as it emphasises her importance and success. Furthermore, the use of 'Extraordinary' shows that Malala's life is a story that should interest and appeal to everyone. This links to Vogue's target audience of ABC1 females aged between 20 and 44, as it links to gender stereotypes of women 'gossiping' together.

c) Layout and Design

Vogue also communicates meaning through the layout and design, through the red colour pallette. Red has connotations of religion and loyalty, as well as love and warmth. This represents her power, and how she became an activist to help others. Furthermore, the 'Z shape' layout follows magazine conventions and so the first cover line likely to be red by readers is one about love, which could almost make them associate Malala with love. This links to Vogues target audience, of ABC1 females, as it supports gender stereotypes of females always being kind and loving.

2a) Social Context = what was going on in society at the time a text was written.

Social context influences magazines, as it causes magazines to focus on real world issues. For example, in the Malala cover, the anchorage text "Survivor, Activist, Legend", shows that the magazine is focussing on a large, serious issue, prominent in the world today. In this case, this issue is the US withdrawing from Afghanistan, sparing fears of the Taliban taking over again, and causing further threat to neighbouring countries.  Furthermore, the use of the cover star, Malala, a well known activist, ensures that her story will be true, yet interesting.
Another way that social context influences magazines is through the cover lines. For example, this magazine was published after lockdown, and so the cover line, "Love after lockdown", allows the reader to almost resonate with the magazine as the topic is relevant for when it was published.

2b)

Ethnicity is a characterisation of people based on having a shared culture.
